Western
aerial mapping techniques have recently reafirmed a tradition long held
by the Hopi that the ancestral lands known as Black Mesa are protected
by a guardian deity, Massau. Modern mapping from the sky has shown Black
Mesa in the form of a giant hand indicating Tuuwanasave'e: the earth center
of Hopi cosmology. This land and its vast, but limited, supply of water
underneath the hand, will support the people as long as they follow the
Great Spirit's instructions and covenant.
