The
Black Mesa Trust logo is based upon an old, sacred symbol for the
Hopi people. The hand represents the earth center of Hopi cosmology, Tuuwanasave'e,
and the inward spiral signifies the Hopi migrational journey to Black
Mesa. This is confirmed by ancient stories and petroglyphs in and around
Hopi lands. Western aerial mapping techniques have also reaffirmed this
tradition long held by the Hopi that ancestral lands known as Black Mesa
are protected by a guardian deity, Massau. Modern mapping from
the sky has shown Black Mesa in the form of a giant hand.
